STUDIO AKA VISIT - 04/03/09

Studio AKA is a leading animation production company known for its ‘idiosyncratic and innovative work. Producing mostly 3D based work for use in film, commercials and idents for clients such as Lloyds Bank, Guinness, BUPA and The National Lottery amongst others. The studio located on Berwick Street in London was the second stop of our visit for the day after visiting the mainframe studio earlier on in the day.

The visit was a very inspiring one. We had the opportu

nity to have first hand information on some of the processes used by the creative directors in creating their work, and a preview of their latest show reel which has recently been put together. But the highlight of the visit was the chance to see the full preview of their most recently completed film VARMINTS which is not released until September this year.

Varmints is studio Aka’s follow up to the 2004 BAFTA winning film Jo Jo in the Stars. Also adapted by Marc Craste. The film is based on the award winning book by Helen wards, illustrated by Marc.

The story tells of the struggle of a small creature to keep the world around him. The most powerful thing about the film is the speechlessness of it yet the music powerful enough to capture interest.

“There was once only the sound of bees and the wind in the wiry grass, the low murmuring of moles in the cool dark earth…” But there are changes afoot and, as other inhabitants come, and “tall buildings scratched the sky where the birds once sang”, there is a loss of the quietness – peace is drowned out by noise”

Varmint is a 25 min long film, solely financed by Studio AKA. Created with a crew of 35 people working tirelessly over a period of about 2years. The sound for the movie was done by Icelandic composer Johann and sound design by Adrian Rhodes.

Helen Ward’s economy of language expressed in the book and transferred to the film combined together with the dramatic images of Mark Craste carefully interpreted into film by studio AKA combine to make this a very imaginative and thought provoking film.
